This past spring, Scott Hodge, district director for British Columbia and the Yukon, along with Patrick Imbeau, pension advocacy and policy officer, met with Rachel Blaney, New Democratic Party (NDP) member of Parliament (MP) for North Island—Powell River, at her office in Ottawa. MP Blaney was accompanied by her assistant, Dan Harris.
During this meeting, several topics relating to Federal Retirees’ priorities were discussed, including:
- The persistent issues with Phoenix which continue to plague thousands of federal retirees.
- The open letter to the Canadian finance minister and provincial finance ministers, signed by 92 business leaders of Canadian corporations, asking the government to amend the rules governing pension funds to encourage them to invest more capital domestically.
- The Association’s call for the federal government to modernize the Canadian Forces Superannuation and RCMP Superannuation Acts.
- The Association’s recommendation urging the government to expand PSP Investments’ board of directors to include a pensioner representative.
This is an excellent example of using current Association advocacy work and recent news updates to draw attention to Federal Retirees’ priorities and help focus the conversation with MPs.
