The Edmonton Branch welcomed pension expert Trevor Tombe (left) and the Association’s own senior pension expert Patrick Imbeau to discuss Alberta’s proposal to exit the Canada Pension Plan.
On Nov. 13, Federal Retirees’ Edmonton Branch hosted a town hall on the provincial government's proposal to create an Alberta Pension Plan to replace the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) within Alberta.
This event featured noted pension expert Trevor Tombe together with the Association’s own senior pension expert, Patrick Imbeau, and was moderated by Federal Retirees president Roy Goodall.
The town hall took place both in-person and online. Attendees were invited to submit questions in advance.

Goodall opened by commenting on the importance of this issue to federal retirees.
In September 2023, the Alberta government presented the report it commissioned on potentially leaving the Canada Pension Plan to create a new Alberta Pension Plan. That same day, our Association asked members whether they support the Alberta government’s proposal to exit the CPP.
“Over 10,000 people responded in 24 hours,” Goodall noted. “95 per cent of them opposed the replacement of the CPP with an APP.”
When asked whether Federal Retirees should be actively involved in defending the CPP and Quebec Pension Plan, 95 per cent responded with a resounding “yes!” Many commented that the CPP is a vital part of their retirement income and that losing any of it will change their ability to pay their bills. All Canadians deserve retirement income security, and weakening the CPP for all Canadians is unacceptable.
“At the Association, we advocate for all members’ pensions and for secure pensions for all Canadians, including the Canada Pension Plan,” Goodall continued. “Currently, our members are concerned that they may lose the Canada Pension Plan and be forced to join the Alberta Pension Plan.”
Federal Retirees is committed to helping its community stay informed as this issue develops. And we hope you’ll seize this opportunity, thanks to the Edmonton Branch, to hear the facts about the proposed Alberta Pension Plan from experts in the field.
