Federal Retirees has helped shape a global decision that could redefine aging and human rights.
The National Association of Federal Retirees (Federal Retirees) applauds the United Nations Human Rights Council for its significant strides toward safeguarding the human rights of older persons.
On April 3, the UN Human Rights Council passed a historic resolution to establish an intergovernmental working group tasked with drafting a UN Convention on the Human Rights of Older Persons. This convention will provide crucial guidance to UN member states on how to effectively promote and protect the rights of older individuals worldwide.
As a founding member of the Canadian Coalition Against Ageism, Federal Retirees has been active in supporting the need for a UN convention. In June 2024, Federal Retirees participated in the UN Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) on Aging in New York, where the Association lobbied and worked with the Canadian government to move discussions to Geneva. During this session, Federal Retirees supported a side event with Canadian Ambassador Bob Rae, where Canadian civil society joined together in calling for a convention.
Federal Retirees member and president of ILC Canada, Margaret Gillis, spoke at the UN Human Rights Council, reiterating the importance of this convention in securing the rights of older persons worldwide.
Federal Retirees remains deeply committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of older Canadians. We will continue our efforts to ensure that the voices of older persons are heard, and that their rights are fully recognized on the international stage.
